My two word review of Ubuntu Linux

Fuck Ubuntu.

A word of warning if you’re like me, and own a Dell notebook. Do not install any version, variation or anything related to Ubuntu on it. It WILL fuck your machine good and proper.

What am I talking about? The as-of-yet unfixed bug number #43745 in the Linux kernel for Ubuntu which corrupts the real-time clock, and causes your machine to boot simply with the message “Time-of-day clock stopped”, leaving you unable to get into the BIOS, boot from external sources, or do anything even remotely useful with your notebook - effectively bricking it.

The fix? Well, you can rip open your notebook and extract the CMOS battery as seen here, or call Dell and see how good that warranty service really is. The awesome thing about that bug? It’s in Dapper, as you can see.. but I just got it in Edgy, and according to the comments, it was there back in Breezy as well.

The next cunt who even breathes Ubuntu in my presence will receive a punch in the face. Jesus fucking Christ. In my entire 13 year history of fucking with PC operating systems, not ONCE have I ever come across one capable of bricking your hardware. I’d like to support the Ubuntu developers, because from their mission statements and other crap, it sounds like they’re trying to do the right thing - but fuck me, a bug this serious possibly spans three releases and still isn’t fixed? One that, to date, doesn’t appear in other Linux distro’s? Get your fucking act together!

In case you’re not a regular reader of my shithole of a blog, and you were directed here from elsewhere - the Dell in question was my until-now-faithful Inspiron 640m, otherwise known as the E1405, states-side. Full specs for it can be found in the Hardware tab in the header section, anywhere on this site.

Yes, this can potentially be a Dell bug as well, but from what I could find, no other Linux distro seems to cause this problem, nor does any other operating system out there (ie, XP, Vista, etc, etc.)

The fact that this was in the release before their current one, and considering how serious the bug is, you’d think there’d be.. ooh.. I dunno.. some kind of attention paid to it?

Come on, if Dell makes a machine that can be rendered completely unbootable through software, it’s not Ubuntu’s fault. That’s flat-out a hardware bug; I mean, think about it, the machine refuses to boot if the clock isn’t right? What the hell?!

Okay, now that I’ve fixed my own notebook, calmed down, and put something else on it, I feel I can respond in a somewhat intelligible manner, without unintentionally offending someone (intentionally, on the other hand….).

Yes, this is clearly a two-part problem. Ubuntu’s kernel causes the real-time-clock to become corrupted, and Dell’s BIOS freaks out, rendering the machine inoperable until you pull the CMOS battery out.

Regardless of Dell’s part of the blame, Ubuntu is STILL the only Linux distro that appears to cause this to happen, according to my extensive :google: fu, and the fact remains that this bug STILL hasn’t been dealt with across the last two releases, possibly spanning the third.

Didn’t Mandrake shit all manner of bricks, because their installer killed LG CDROMs, and pull all their downloads in a timely fashion to fix the bug? How can Ubuntu claim that they offer support for their community, when something this serious remains unchecked to this day?

Quit pushing the blame solely on Dell. Ubuntu also has some responsibility to get their shit together as well.

    Hi,

Just wanted to say that i am also an owner of an Inspiron 640m. I have been using dapper for some time ago and (once you setup some things, Ubuntu didn’t recognize my screen resolution or the dual core, out-of-the-box), it worked flawlessly for two or three months.

The bad thing is that once i updated to edgy, some stuff stopped working, and still there are some fixes without solution, yet. That’s how i came across to your blog btw.

    Regards.

Soo this is what all msn tag, ubuntu slaggin was about.

Shame bout the problem, Ubuntu is a really nice distro, only probs i had with my lapotp Compaq V5150, was getting XGL to run, and that of finding a compatable wifi card.

Without the possible bricking of ones laptop, its one of the easiest installs ive seen for anything let alone linux.

Hope they fix the problem, i’m suprised there is not some workaround for it, the forums usualy cover anything and everything.

    Get your lumines on!

It seems that you did not try the Ubuntu Forums. You only need to post your problem and they will happily and speedily give you the advise and tech-support you need before the end of the day. Please, reconsider and try it again, but with Ubuntu Forums support this time. Since it does not have the bothers of virus-scanning, spyware-scanning, Trajan-scanning, etc… , it is a FAST alternative to Windows and Mac and it has no need of defragmenting the hard drive. I am sure that it will be worth your while.

    Take care,
    The Unnamed One

Well I think everybody who uses linux has realized that Ubuntu sucks major donkey balls. I am not saying that Ubuntu is bad, I am saying it sucks ass big fucking time. Yeah it’s free. Like getting anal-raped by homeless pyscho fucks in the bronx, this is free as well. Does that mean it’s a good thing? The problem comes from all these gay-virgin nerd fucks who will blow you if you are wearing an ubuntu shirt. Talk about a losewear, if you want to get backlisted from the entire female population of the planet; wear one of these shirts -pink available. So check out ubuntu forums and you’ll see what i mean…Here is a typical post: ubuntu keep on crashing when i go to youtube but i love what you are doing, it is so much much better than windzoob (by the way if i meet bill fucking gates i will insert my laptop up his ass for being such a nuisance). Now ubuntufuckheads if you are reading this just install sidux and feel the fucking difference. Morons. And don’t forget to install today’s 23 updates that fixes yesterday’s 32 updates which were defective. FUCK!

Hello and welcome to Respect Sakura, yet another shitty blog under the premise of being an animu blog, when it's really just about Jaymz's tech leanings, spending habits and crack-inspired ramblings on topics noone cares about. Oh, and that other guy posts stuff sometimes, too.
