Just an update - I got a response on Monday by Danny from Microsoft's Australia & New Zealand Online Tech Support. So far he's been quite helpful in trying to figure this one out. So far, I've discovered two ways to get around the non-genuine issue - the second one not requiring swapping product keys around.

In any case, I've been trialling Vista for work, and I gotta say - there's quite a few nuances with XP right now that Vista would do wonders for, one in particular is the better compatibility with unprivileged user accounts. I think I'll delve more into this in a new post.

Yes, it's all working now - but no thanks to Microsoft. Still no response to my support query, but switching between my Technet/Retail key managed to get it legit and genuine once more. Not exactly inspiring for those who, unlike me, don't have a Technet or MSDN key just lying around.
