So it’s no small secret that I have a thing for Microsoft beta programs. One such program, that was announced a few weeks ago, is the Windows Home Server beta. Microsoft are essentially pushing this thing as all the cool technologies that geeks have had in one form or another for a while now, but in a nice, neat, user friendly package. So, those who’ve read about it, click on every blog/review link they see with “Home Server” in the title should know what this thing is, and what it does by now..

But it’s so much more than that. The sucker runs on a cutdown version of Windows Server 2003, making it just a remote desktop session away from being a proper application server as well. As an example of this, I’ve set uTorrent to pick up torrents from a specified shared folder, save incomplete downloads to one of the server’s local drives, and then transfer the completed file to another share set out for downloads. I then set up a scheduler for when I do and don’t want uTorrent hogging my bandwidth, ensure to enable the WebUI in case I need it, and then using the old instsrv and srvany trick - I make it into a system service.

So far, it’s been running pretty sweet, and it’s given Heracles a new life. It’s not without its issues, but I have to say - I like the notion of Drive Extender much much better than NAS RAID solutions, and the automated backup is all kinds of awesome. It’s also inspired me to get off my ass, and start looking into better storage solutions rather than having my main PC on all the goddamn time, hosting all my goddamn drives, and basically being the “fileserver”.

The other benefit is I can now schedule torrents from work. God, I love technology. :coal:

Not content with just 1.5GB, I decided to take it a few steps further and a few more 400GB Samsungs into the mix.

I now have 2.25TB of consolidated storage, across 7 drives. 4x 400GB, and 3x 300GB. I also now have enough room to duplicate the stuff for added redundancy (and yes, I have backups as well). Here’s what it looks like:

The next step? I’ll be replacing those 300GB drives, and adding another 4x 400GB to the mix. Then, it’s time to replace the motherboard and CPU with something a little more energy efficient.

    The money flow never stops.

Hello and welcome to Respect Sakura, yet another shitty blog under the premise of being an animu blog, when it's really just about Jaymz's tech leanings, spending habits and crack-inspired ramblings on topics noone cares about. Oh, and that other guy posts stuff sometimes, too.

Please be warned that this site may contain strong language, adult themes, and sexual discussion about characters that may appear underage but are really over 18, and anything that may look or sound illegal really isn't, you just imagined it because your mind is sick and twisted, and it ain't my fault so don't you dare blame that shit on me son.
